From the 12th to the 18th of July a group of young, curious individuals, with a passion for hospitality, were given the opportunity to become students for a week at the world’s top hotel management school. This year’s 2015 edition of the Summer Academy attracted 88 young and talented minds to the campus of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne from all around the world. The campus welcomed participants from Europe, South America, the Middle East, Africa and many more places.
At this year’s Summer Academy, students were introduced to various areas of the hospitality industry and were offered real-life experiences, to stimulate their discovery of what the industry has to offer. The participants jumped into the exciting world of hospitality through hands-workshops and courses designed to initiate them to the wide range of career opportunities available in both the hotel and catering industry, as well as the lifestyle associated to them. Examples of the workshops carried out this week included:
• Becoming a chef for one day, where students took part in kitchen organization activities and cooked their own dishes.
• Exploring the latest trends in the hospitality sector through introductory classes about the world of hospitality and Hotel business simulation exercises
• Learning about ‘service excellence’ by means of interaction between faculty members and other participants during service workshops
• Gaining knowledge and an understanding of “savoir-être” and “savoir-vivre”, both key success factors in the hospitality industry.
With great learning experiences, comes as well entertaining activities; participants were able to indulge in various sport activities – tennis, football and petanque to name a few – providing them with the opportunity to mingle with one and another outside of their workshops. Moreover, participants were given the opportunity to visit various sites around the beautiful city of Lausanne, but also 5-star hotels and a local vineyard which offered our passionate group of individuals a full immersion into the world of the hospitality and catering industry. Finally, on the last evening of the Summer Academy, the Gala Dinner took place where our participants received their certificates and were able to enjoy each other’s company one last time before having to prepare their temporary goodbyes for the next day.
On behalf of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, we would like to thank all of our motivated and cheerful participants for taking part in this year’s Summer Academy, as well as our faculty and staff members for their contribution in making this an unforgettable experience. We look forward to welcoming the next batch for the 2016 Summer Academy!
