What if over the next 20 years, sector boundaries will disappear? A more automated hospitality will welcome hedonistic engineers as well as graduates from humanistic universities. The “dual system” will be enhanced by a holistic process that will prepare people for life and not just for a job. Neurosciences, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, Art, and History will probably have the same importance as Accounting, Finance, F&B, Housekeeping, etc. The ascent of science and technology in human life in the next 20 years will give rise to a counter reaction and result in an increase in spirituality which purpose would be the discovery of life’s meaning; and hospitality education will be one of the best ways to achieve this purpose.

The really strong countries have pathways from vocational education straight through to technical colleges. An interesting data point from Switzerland is that 42 percent of the students who get fours or fives on PISA exams [the highest scores] enter the vocational system. Vocational education can also act as a pathway towards many roles historically seen as the domain of the university education. But what if this overlapping changes this type of education? The high demand of profitability in hospitality pushes a lot of shareholders to bring top manager with more business skills (finance, real estate, marketing, etc.)

It is probable that in the next 20 years, you will have to pay for driving by yourself a car because the transportation will be completely automatic. What if this will happen also with the basic work in hospitality? Restaurants will be industrialised and the back-of-the-house of the majority of hotels will be automated. People will pay to have the opportunity to make themselves a soup. The soft skills and the hard skills will merge together. A newdualization”? What if in 2025, the majority of universities throughout the world will offer their undergraduate programs in a virtual mode? Only a handful of specialised research schools and liberal arts colleges will continue to use live teachers in classroom situations. The current research activity will be replaced by powerful robotics tools (ex. Google alphabet) and the skills of the researcher will be to put the right question and not to find the right answer.

What if major corporations will establish their own institutions of higher learning, where employees could advance their training and obtain graduate degrees? Due to the information and knowledge explosion, the number of years required to obtain academic degrees will increase. All universities will have specialised programs and if the top hotel schools do not create their USPs, they will disappear or will be transformed into general service management schools. In the same time, if the hotel schools focus much more on the basic relation between the guest and the host and introduce advanced sciences enabled by technologies to understand this relation, they will be the most asked educational and research institutions. Innovation and entrepreneurship will help this transformation. Empowerment, improved education, career advancement opportunities and recognition will be some of the characteristics of the winner companies. Prof. Dr Ray F. Iunius is the author of various academic and professional articles published by journals in the management of services, technology, and innovation. He is also the author of a number of books such as « Industrie de l’accueil », « Hôtellerie de Luxe », « La gestion des spas », “Un Hôtel, un modèle ?” in de Boeck editions and co-author of the “Lausanne Report on the future of Hospitality Industry.”

He is the founder of the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne Institute of Technology and Entrepreneurship (EHLITE), the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (INTEHL), the Students Business Projects (SBP), the EHLITE magazine, and the Chair of Innovation Paul Dubrule.

Ray earns a BSc, MS and PhD in Technical Sciences from the University of Transylvania Brasov and an MBA and PhD from the Faculty of Business and Economics (HEC) of the Lausanne University.
