Senior international hospitality and tourism figures were in Glasgow to mark the start of an innovative international masters programme, designed to address a recognised leadership deficit in the global industry.

The first cohort of the new Executive Masters in Hospitality and Tourism Leadership took place at Strathclyde Business School in partnership with industry group the International Leadership School.

It will be delivered by Strathclyde Business School in partnership with the Cornell School of Hotel Adminisitration in New York, and Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne in Switzerland, in collaboration with the International Leadership School in Scotland. Elements of the programme will be delivered in New York and Switzerland as well as Scotland.

Susan Hart, dean of Strathclyde Business School, said: “International collaboration is key to ensuring this global industry, which contributes hugely to the Scottish, UK and international economies, is suitably supplied with leaders for the future. As well as the academic focus, the programme has been designed in partnership with industry, for the overall benefit of the industry.

“Participants will have the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s leading hospitality, tourism and leadership academics. And because they are already experienced in their chosen sectors, will be able to learn from each other. We have been encouraged by the level of support shown by the global industry towards this programme and are already looking towards next year’s programme in this fast-paced sector.”

The first cohort is made up of senior figures from international hospitality companies, as well as smaller organisations. One of the first participants is Angela Vickers, Managing Director of Apex Hotels, which operates eight hotels in Edinburgh, Dundee and London. Angela said: “The hospitality and tourism sector is an ever-changing industry which is becoming increasingly digitally-led and international in its make-up.

Having the opportunity to learn from world-leading academics and network with peers will give Apex Hotels a crucial advantage during a critical period for the sector.” Initial start-up funding was provided by the Scottish Funding Council along with support from Scottish Enterprise.

Dusit Thani College (DTC) has been awarded the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL) Certification to its new four-year International Bachelor Programme in Hotel and Resort Management in English, which will be launched in September 2012.

Lausanne Hospitality Consulting (LHC), the knowledge expansion subsidiary of EHL, managing the EHL supported schools network, is pleased to extend the club of high-end hotel schools to Bangkok, a flourishing Asian metropolis.

Dusit Thani College is a world-renowned educational institution established by Dusit International in 1993 and it is accredited by the Office of Higher Education Commission in Thailand. Their success is grounded in their approach to learning: seamlessly blending academics with real-life experience and grounding on both Thai and international standards of hospitality. To complement its demanding curriculum, DTC possesses state-of-the-art facilities including access to the adjacent Princess Hotel, with open-ended possibilities for transfer of knowledge.

As part of EHL certification, LHC will ensure that DTC reaches excellence in hospitality education. To achieve this, the “Qualified Learning Facilitator” (QLF), a unique Train the Trainer programme, has been delivered in February 2012 to 9 DTC faculty members. Additionally, LHC will support DTC in marketing, student recruitment and reinforcing its academic quality. Being part of the EHL community, DTC students from the International Bachelor Programme will have the possibility to study among the EHL school network on a case by case basis.

EHL and LHC look forward to this new relationship and to meeting the students of this newly developed International Programme.
